The Big Fat Fake - Criminal Background Check
There once was a boy who was in high school. One day he went to his car and found that someone in a big wheel truck had parked on his car, blocking him in the school parking lot. After waiting for over thirty minutes and missing a very important appointment he decided to let the air out of one of the tires by cutting a hole with his pocket knife. He was aware of people watching him but thought nothing of it because he thought it was within his rights to take this action. When the air was almost completely out of the front tire he was able to pull out and get to his appointment, though very late.
The next day at school he was called in to the principal's office and escorted by police officers. There he was a few of the witnesses to his supposed crime and was visually assaulted by them as the guilty party. The detective in this case talked with him about what happened and why and the boy explained. He found out that the truck belonged to someone he had known as a freshman and once he got a chance to talk to him they decided that he would buy him a new tire and they would call it even. The detective stated that the case would be closed.
After writing up a document and having all parties involved sign it after purchasing the new tire as well as paying for it to be towed and mounted on the rim, he carried this paper with him just in case something should come up in the future. About a year later he was pulled over for speeding and having a warrant out for his arrest, was taken to jail. The warrant was for slashing a tire about a year before. Once a lawyer was hired and the court date was set his lawyer called in the victim of the tire slashing as well as presenting the signed document stating that all damages had been settled out of court. The judge stated that it was a crime to do such a thing regardless of a settlement and this boy spent the next three months in county jail on a class A misdemeanor.
When the court clerk entered the information into the court computer she accidentally labeled it as a felony. After seven years of having this on his record the statue of limitations was up and it was supposed to be removed automatically as to never come up in a criminal background check. It was never removed even after hiring a lawyer to remove it. For all seven of those years and every year since then he has had an almost impossible time getting a job or an apartment due to this false information coming up in his criminal background check. He often thinks about suicide.
The moral of this story is that the criminal background check is a farce. It is a big fat fake way to keep people that made a small mistake in their past down and out. There is no reason for it to be in existence and it is an intrusion of this thing called freedom that most Americans are supposed to have. Fight it with your last dying breath.

Today's Tip On Criminal Record
Since 9/11, the American public has become much more conscious about security. It is now common for someone looking for work to learn that an employer checks criminal records of prospective new employees. Criminal background checks are now being done by some companies on current employees. As a result, some people are finding that offenses committed many years ago are causing trouble in the present. Additionally, most states have laws requiring professional licensing boards to do criminal record checks to for occupation-related convictions. This practice is leading to youthful offenses, making it difficult for workers to find jobs. Some people are even losing jobs that they have worked at for years.
