My Viewpoints On Crime
Is crime really worse now than it used to be? I don't think so. I think that crime rates are the same as they really ever were and maybe even a little bit better. People are really no more or no less safe than they were two hundred years ago.
Lots of people blame all sorts of things on crime. Many have stopped using public parks because they are frightened of teenagers and drug dealers. This is silly behavior. Parks aren't dens of inequity and they need more families to come and take advantage of what they can offer.
Crime happens in this culture because of the disparity between the people that have money and every advantage and those who are impoverished. Some crime is traced to bored rich kids, but that figure is small.
No one wants to be the victim of a crime, however, the energy that it takes to worry about if something bad will happen is more troubling than the slight chance of being victimized. I disagree with the stranger danger programs that a lot of elementary schools have implemented. I think that it frightens children to confront them with realities of crime.
High crime rates in some areas are a little misleading. Violent crime is one thing; victimless crime is an entirely different matter. I do not agree with the drug laws and therefore I believe that drug offenders have committed no real crime. I think that they are really prisoners of the war on drugs.
So many people are interested in true crime stories. Mass murderers and serial killers seem to capture the imagination of people. This is only because instances of mass or serial murder are so rare that it is an oddity.
I hate hearing about crime on the local news. They don't seem to muster enough anger toward the church secretary that embezzled many thousands of dollars as they do against a kid busted with a bag of marijuana. It just seems a little lopsided to me.
I just don't really understand the saying the crime doesn't pay. For some people, it seems to pay quite well. For others, crime costs them way more than they bargained for.
